INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Adam Driver, a two-time Academy Award nominee who will shortly play Enzo Ferrari in a biopic of the Italian automobile entrepreneur, will be the honorary starter for the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

Driver is most known for his role as Kylo Ren in the three most recent “Star Wars” films, and he has received Academy Award nominations for his efforts in “BlacKkKlansman” and “Marriage Story.” Driver has also gotten four Primetime Emmy nods for his work on the comedy-drama “Girls” and will appear on “Saturday Night Live” in 2020.

“Adam is going to experience one of the most exhilarating, powerful, and exciting moments in sports as he stands atop the flag stand and waves the green flag to officially start the world’s greatest race,” said Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles in a statement Tuesday.

Driver grew up in the northern Indiana town of Mishawaka before joining the Marine Corps. He returned from military service and enrolled at the University of Indianapolis before auditioning for Julliard, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

His other film credits include “House of Gucci” by Ridley Scott, “Logan Lucky” by Steven Soderbergh, and “Silence” by Martin Scorsese. On and off Broadway, he featured in “Look Back in Anger” and the revival of Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This.”

Adam Driver, a two-time Academy Award nominee, will shortly play Enzo Ferrari in a biopic of the Italian automobile entrepreneur.

Due to its traditional Memorial Day weekend location, the Indy 500 is steeped in military pageantry. Enlistment ceremonies are held, helicopters and other equipment are displayed, and “Taps” is played right before the command to start the engines.

Driver joined the Marines immediately after the attacks on September 11, 2001, and served as a mortarman in the 1st Marines for nearly three years. Following a mountain bike injury, he was medically discharged as a lance corporal and co-founded Arts in the Armed Forces, a charity that performs theatre and musical performances for military personnel.

“Race day means a lot to our drivers, our fans all over the world, and especially our active-duty military members and veterans,” added Boles. “Adam is not only a global star, but also a former US Marine who will be an excellent addition to ‘The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.'”

Ethan Hawke And Maya Hawke Have A Running Joke About ‘Wildcat,’ Their Flannery O’Connor Movie

Ethan Hawke and his daughter, Maya Hawke, have a running joke about their Flannery O’Connor film.

“Wildcat,” directed by Ethan and starring Maya as O’Connor, was created with genuine authenticity. It’s a deeply creative look at the Southern Catholic novelist and short story writer behind “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” weaving in and out of her imagination and actual life.

Lupus claimed O’Connor’s life in 1964, when she was 39. She won the National Book Award posthumously in 1972. Though she is well-known for her language and sharp social satire, she has recently faced criticism for racism in her private correspondence and her depiction of race in her work. It was a difficult but potentially rewarding region. However, the Hawkes can’t help but giggle as they imagine pitching to a major studio or streamer.

Here’s how things could go:

Maya: “We want to make a film about an unfortunate-looking woman with lupus.” She struggles with her beliefs and does not have any lovers.

Ethan: “She’s a really brilliant writer but she’s completely unsuccessful.”

Maya: “Also, her minor success has recently been utterly disregarded, and people are mostly concerned in deleting her from the canon these days. “What do you think?”

Jonathan: “Sounds like the makings of a commercial, hit movie!”

If it isn’t clear, “Wildcat” (in select theaters Friday) was produced independently. To flesh out the cast, both Hawkes relied largely on friends with whom they had previously collaborated. The large ensemble includes Laura Linney, Liam Neeson, Steve Zahn, and Vincent D’Onofrio, to mention a few.

Maya had the concept for a movie about the day she decided to devote her life to acting. Despite having two successful actresses as parents, including mother Uma Thurman, she had hesitated due to her passion of reading. She was concerned that if she attended Juilliard, she would be forced to choose a decision. So, in a little act of defiance, Maya decided to audition not with a monologue from the theatrical canon, but with one she had revised from O’Connor’s “Prayer Journal” with her father during his breaks while filming “The Magnificent Seven.”

“If I showed them that I was really interested in literature, and if then they still wanted me, then it would probably be a place that would still allow me to explore language and writing and poetry the way that I wanted,” Maya said. “What a rebel.”

Ethan had also read O’Connor early on, at the suggestion of his mother, who encouraged him to read female authors in addition to Faulkner and Hemingway. They were both drawn to this prickly woman who wrote about faith without preaching, as well as about race and white Christian hypocrisy, in a way that few others had. She was also talented, self-deprecating, and suffering with the sickness that killed her father. At 24, she received her diagnosis and returned to Milledgeville, Georgia, to live with her mother (portrayed by Linney).

Ethan has little interest in biopics, particularly “in the age of Wikipedia.” However, upon deciding to direct and co-write the film, he was inspired by films such as Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull” and Jane Campion’s “An Angel At My Table.” They were about real people, Jake LaMotta and Janet Frame, but they did not require any prior knowledge of boxing or literature. They were only films about individuals.

“(‘Wildcat’) is a kind of treatise on imagination, reality and faith and how those three things intersect with each other,” he remarked. “I’m not attempting to teach a college course on Flannery. We used her life experience as a starting point for a conversation.

Before delving too deeply into the process, they addressed themselves difficult questions about filming a film about someone who has made racist remarks.

“It begged the question: Do we want to make a film about someone who said some hurtful words at some point? What would it say about us if we did? And how do you become a decent anti-racist? Ethan said. “One of the things I realized was that you can’t create a story about America, past or present, without mentioning America’s wounds, crimes, and sins. One academic put it beautifully: Flannery O’Connor is a racist in rehabilitation, much like our society.

Maya pondered if depiction was always a celebration or if it could be an observation. She hopes it’s the latter, which she describes as a politeness that is frequently provided to films about complicated guys but may be less so when it comes to female characters.

Something remarked by novelist James McBride when Ethan was writing on “The Good Lord Bird” remained with him as well.

“He used to say how important it was that you don’t paint racists with horns on their head because people don’t have horns and racism is real,” Ethan added.

After much research and deliberation, they decided not to back down from the topic or defend her.

“I’m interested in this woman, and I’m interested in all the truths of her life,” he added.

“Wildcat” also served as inspiration for Maya’s upcoming album, “Chaos Angel” (due out May 31). The title and title track are based on a scene she shared with Philip Ettinger in which O’Connor discusses wrestling with her guardian angel.

“That idea really hit me in my gut,” Maya remarked. “We resist our better selves… As soon as we finished shooting the film, I went to make this album.”

Maya is now 25, the same age her father was when he finished “Before Sunrise” and was performing on stage in Chicago in Sam Shepard’s “Buried Child.” They are close and like-minded, frequently finishing one other’s words. However, Hawke admits that he is little envious of Maya’s musical abilities.

“There’s a part of me that has joked my whole life that all I really am is a failed musician,” he remarked. “All art strives to be music. It’s the simplest emotional connection we may form with one another. So, to see her thrive in this art form? I’m a little jealous of her for that.”

Madonna’s Biggest-Ever Concert Transforms Rio’s Copacabana Beach Into A Massive Dance Floor

Rio de Janeiro – Madonna performed a free concert on Copacabana beach Saturday night, transforming Rio de Janeiro’s long stretch of sand into a gigantic dance floor packed with her followers.

It was the final performance of The Celebration Tour, her first retrospective, which began in October in London.

The “Queen of Pop” opened the event with her 1998 song, “Nothing Matters.” Huge cheers erupted from the humming, dense crowd against the barriers. Others had house parties in brightly lit flats and hotels overlooking the ocean. Helicopters and drones hovered overhead as motorboats and sailboats anchored off the beach crowded the bay.

Madonna’s Biggest-Ever Concert Transforms Rio’s Copacabana Beach Into A Massive Dance Floor

“Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world,” Madonna, 65, addressed the audience. She pointed out the ocean view, the mountains, and the Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking the city, “This place is magic.”

Madonna performed her iconic classics, such as “Like A Virgin” and “Hung Up.” For the opening to “Like A Prayer,” her head was entirely covered in a black cape, and she held a rosary in her hands.

The diva paid an emotional homage to “all the bright lights” lost to AIDS while singing “Live to Tell,” with black and white photographs of those who perished from the illness flashing behind her.

Later, she was joined on stage by Brazilian musicians Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

Rio spent the last few days preparing for the performance.

According to G1, an estimated 1.6 million people attended the show, which Rio City Hall’s tourism department organized. This is more than ten times Madonna’s record attendance of 130,000 at Paris’ Parc des Sceaux in 1987. Madonna’s official website promoted the event as the largest of her four-decade career.

In recent days, the excitement was evident. Fans gathered outside the grand, beachside Copacabana Palace hotel, where Madonna is staying, hoping to glimpse the music icon. During the sound check on the stage set up in front of the hotel, they danced on the beach.

By lunchtime Saturday, people had gathered in front of the hotel. A white-bearded man carried a banner that read, “Welcome Madonna, you are the best. I love you.”

Flags with “Madonna” printed over a background of Copacabana’s famous black and white waved sidewalk pattern were strung from balconies. The area was packed with street vendors and concertgoers dressed in themed T-shirts, sweating beneath the hot heat.

“Since Madonna arrived here, I’ve been coming every day with this outfit to welcome my idol, my diva, my pop queen,” said Rosemary de Oliveira Bohrer, 69, wearing a gold-colored cone bra and a black cap.

“It’s going to be an unforgettable show here in Copacabana,” said Oliveira Bohrer, a retired civil servant who lives nearby.

Eighteen sound towers were positioned around the beach to ensure all attendees could hear the music. Her two-hour presentation began at 10:37 p.m. local time, about 50 minutes behind schedule.

City Hall issued a report in April indicating that the event would contribute 293 million reals ($57 million) to the local economy. The Hotel Association of Rio predicted that hotel capacity in Copacabana will reach 98%. According to the platform, fans across Brazil, Argentina, and France booked Airbnb for the weekend. According to a City Hall statement, Rio’s international airport expected 170 flights from 27 locations between May 1 and May 6.

“It’s a unique opportunity to see Madonna, who knows if she’ll ever come back,” said Alessandro Augusto, 53, who flew in from Brazil’s Ceara state, almost 2,500 kilometers (1,555 miles) from Rio.

“Welcome Queen!” ran Heineken advertisements all across the city, the words above an image of an upturned bottle cap simulating a crown.

Heineken was one of many firms hoping to profit from the frenzy. Bars and restaurants made “Like a Virgin” cocktails. A downtown boutique famous for selling Carnival garb has entirely remade itself, loading its shelves with Madonna-themed costumes, fans, fanny packs, and lingerie.

According to local authorities, the mega-event was organized similarly to New Year’s Eve, when millions of people congregate on Copacabana for a fireworks display. That yearly festival is notorious for numerous thefts and muggings, and there were concerns that Madonna’s appearance would be no exception.

Rio’s security strategy comprised 3,200 military men and 1,500 civilian police officers on standby. In the run-up to the event, Brazil’s navy inspected yachts that wanted to position themselves offshore to see the performance.

Madonna’s Biggest-Ever Concert Transforms Rio’s Copacabana Beach Into A Massive Dance Floor

Several massive concerts have previously taken place on Copacabana beach, including Rod Stewart’s 1994 New Year’s Eve show, which drew more than 4 million people and was the largest free rock concert in history, according to Guinness World Records. Many of those spectators also came to witness Rio’s fireworks spectacular, so a more fitting comparison could be to the Rolling Stones in 2006, when 1.2 million people flocked to the sand, according to Rio’s military police, the daily Folha de Sao Paulo said at the time.

Ana Beatriz Soares, a fan who attended Copacabana on Saturday, said Madonna had left an indelible mark over the years.

“Madonna had to sprint so that modern pop musicians could walk. That’s why she’s significant, since she acts as an influence to today’s pop divas,” Soares explained.

“And that was forty years ago, not in 40 days, but in 40 months. “It’s been 40 years,” she said.
