Olympic Gold Medal Race Between USA And China Comes Down To The Final Day
It’s the last day of the Summer Olympics, and the United States needs to win one more gold medal to tie China in the overall gold medal rankings from the 2024 Summer Olympics.
While Team USA leads in total medals with 123 in Paris, it trails China by one in the gold medal race entering Sunday. The Asian nation has 40 gold medals, while the United States has 39 heading into the Games’ final event, a women’s basketball gold medal game between Team USA and France.

The total medal rankings are not close. The United States has 123 gold, silver, and bronze medals, more than China, which has 90.
On the last day, Team USA can tie China in the gold medal standings. US teams and athletes fought for gold medals in women’s basketball, volleyball, freestyle wrestling in the 76kg weight class, weightlifting in the 81kg weight class, and maybe women’s omnium in track cycling. Jennifer Valente, an American cyclist, successfully defended her title in the women’s omnium, finishing with 144 points and earning the United States its 39th gold medal.
China won gold in women’s weightlifting in the 81kg weight class on Sunday as Li Wenwen defended her Olympic championship from Tokyo, giving her country its 40th gold medal.
In contrast, the United States is widely favoured for winning the gold medal in women’s basketball. Team USA has not lost an Olympic women’s basketball game since 1992 and has dominated the remainder of the tournament thus far.

In 2021, Team USA won the overall gold medal race by one, with 39 to China’s 38. To duplicate the feat on Sunday, American competitors must do exceptionally well.
However, Team USA has already surpassed the total number of medals won at the previous Summer Games. The Americans earned 113 medals in Tokyo.
