They could reclaim the marks by spending up to $11 per month. However, some longtime users, including 92-year-old Star Trek icon William Shatner, have refused to pay for the premium service promoted by Twitter’s billionaire owner and CEO Elon Musk.

Musk is gleefully promising, after months of delay, that Saturday is the deadline for celebs, journalists, and others who have been verified for free to pay or forfeit their legacy status.

“It will be glorious,” he wrote on Monday, responding to a Twitter user who pointed out that Saturday is also April Fools’ Day.

Musk has been attempting to boost Twitter’s revenue since purchasing it for $44 billion in October by convincing more people to pay for a premium subscription. However, his decision represents his belief that the blue verification marks have become an undeserved or “corrupt” prestige symbol for elite celebrities and news reporters.

Along with celebrities, one of Twitter’s main reasons for starting about 14 years ago to mark profiles with a free blue check mark was to verify politicians, activists, and people who suddenly find themselves in the news, as well as little-known journalists at small publications around the world, as an additional tool to curb misinformation coming from accounts that are impersonating people.
