QUEBEC – According to provincial police, at least one person went missing Thursday after an explosion at a fuel distribution company in Quebec’s Lanaudiere area (SQ).

During a press conference in St-Roch-de-l’Achigan, Quebec,  the municipality where the blast occurred, SQ spokesperson Eloise Cossette warned that more people could be missing.

There have been no verified deaths.

Cossette added that police would only be able to search the area once it was deemed safe by the team of 50 firefighters putting out the flames.

The explosion occurred at 11:17 a.m. on Thursday at a propane factory about 50 kilometers north of Montreal. Propane Lafortune, located on Route 339 near Saint-Régis Road, is a family-run business that provides propane services in the Lanaudiere region.

Quebec Residents Told To Stay Inside

Suzanne Lafortune, who lives nearby but has nothing to do with the business, said that she had to leave her home after the explosion and that her son rushed to help.

“I believed it was an accident because I heard the explosion and looked and saw a massive fire, and my daughter contacted 911,” she told reporters Thursday afternoon.

“We can’t stay in our house because it’s unsafe.”

According to Fire Chief François Thivierge, the first units to arrive attempted to interfere but were forced to back off due to the risk of future explosions.

Fire Hard To Control After Explosion

Thivierge said that the fire was not under control and that officials were being careful because of safety concerns and the possibility that oil or gas could leak into a nearby river and harm the environment.

Mayor Sebastien Marcil of St-Roch de l’Achigan addressed the press conference with tears in his eyes.

“My sympathies are with all who have been affected by this catastrophe, both near and distant,” he stated.

Buildings within a one-kilometer radius of the explosion were evacuated, affecting hundreds of people. The basement of the St-Roch-de-l’Achigan church serves as a resource center for those in need.

Firefighters from Repentigny, Rawdon, Ste-Julienne, and St-Lin-Laurentides are assisting local firefighters. Police have arrived to aid.

“My sympathies are with the citizens of St-Roch-de-l’Achigan, Quebec and the staff of Propane Lafortune,” tweeted Quebec Premier Francois Legault, adding, “Please be attentive and respect the evacuation precautions.” I’d want to thank all of the emergency response teams who are on the scene.”

François Bonnardel, Minister of Public Security, stated that his office is “closely monitoring the situation,” adding that “our thoughts are with the workers.”

A hotline has been established for all Saint-Roch-de-L’Achigan, Quebec residents who want to learn more about the ongoing fire: 514-347-7041.

9 Corpses Found Adrift In Boat Off Brazil Were Likely Migrants From Mauritania And Mali, Police Say

Barcelona, Spain – Brazilian authorities investigating the horrific discovery of a boat full of corpses believe the victims were African migrants from Mali and Mauritania.

On Saturday, fishermen off Brazil’s northern coastal state of Pará discovered the yacht adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil’s Federal Police announced late Monday that nine people had been found deceased.

“Documents and objects found near the bodies indicate that the victims were migrants from the African continent, from the region of Mauritania and Mali,” according to the press release. Police said that other nationalities could have been among the dead.

The about 12-meter (39-foot)-long white and blue canoe-shaped boat discovered in Brazil matches traits with Mauritanian fishing pirogues commonly used by West African migrants and refugees fleeing to Spain’s Canary Islands, implying that Brazil was not their goal.

The Atlantic crossing from West Africa to European Union territory is among the most dangerous in the world. The Atlantic trade winds and currents may carry away boats that miss their destination, causing them to drift for months. Migrants aboard frequently perish from dehydration and starvation. Others have jumped into the ocean out of desperation.

As boatloads of refugees continue to arrive, MPs vote on asylum applications at the 164th session of the Bundestag on Friday, April 12, 2024, in Berlin, Germany.

The German parliament has approved payment cards for refugee seekers to minimize cash payments.
According to a report released last year by the Associated Press, at least seven boats from northwest Africa were discovered in the Caribbean and Brazil in 2021, all containing dead victims.

This year, migration from Africa’s northwest coast to Spain increased by 500%, which frightened European officials. Despite a 210 million euro agreement between the European Union and Mauritania in February, the majority of departures have occurred from the West African country.

According to Spain’s interior minister, more than 13,000 migrants have arrived in the Canaries so far in 2024, with hundreds more reported missing. In Mauritania, families have even formed a “national commission” to find the missing migrants. Families who contacted the Associated Press have been anxiously awaiting news of the yacht discovered in Brazil.

Brazilian federal police say they are still working to identify the victims and determine the cause of death, a challenging process given the advanced state of decomposition they were discovered in.

North Korea Is Buying Chinese Surveillance Cameras In A Push To Tighten Control, Report Says

north korea

SEOUL, South Korea —According to a report released Tuesday, North Korea is installing surveillance cameras in schools and workplaces and collecting fingerprints, pictures, and other biometric information from its inhabitants as part of a technology-driven effort to further monitor its populace.

According to the researchers, the state’s increasing use of digital surveillance tools, which combine equipment imported from China with domestically developed software, threatens to erase many of the small spaces left for North Koreans to engage in private business activities, access foreign media, and secretly criticize their government.

However, more electricity and better network access are necessary to advance the remote nation’s digital goals. According to the research released by the North Korea-focused website 38 North, these limitations, as well as a history of relying on human techniques to spy on its inhabitants, mean that digital surveillance is less widespread than in China.

The study’s findings are consistent with commonly held beliefs that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is increasing attempts to tighten state control over its populace and foster loyalty to his rule.

The COVID-19 pandemic bolstered these efforts, as the North implemented severe border controls that were maintained for three years before a cautious reopening in 2023.

Walls and electronic monitoring tools put up along the border with China during the outbreak are most likely helping the government crack down on foreign influence and imported media. New legislation and recent reports of harsher punishments indicate this.

“After seeing that it is possible to close the border so tightly, I believe they are now eager to keep it that way,” said Martyn Williams, an analyst who co-authored the report with Natalia Slavney.

The pandemic might have contributed to increased surveillance across the nation, but Williams believes that the rapidly falling cost of surveillance technology has played a much larger role.

The analysis evaluated North Korean surveillance technologies using information from local and foreign media coverage and publicly disclosed research at North Korean universities and governmental institutions. The researchers also stated that they interviewed 40 North Korean escapees about the surveillance they faced while living in the country and, through unspecified partners, surveyed 100 current North Korean residents in 2023 via phone, text messages, and other encrypted communication methods to ensure their safety.

North Korea Is Buying Chinese Surveillance Cameras In A Push To Tighten Control, Report Says

According to state media sources, video surveillance is increasingly ubiquitous in schools, businesses, and airports. The cameras are primarily purchased from Chinese manufacturers, ranging from simple video feeds to more complex versions with features such as facial recognition.

Experts have cautioned that China is selling the technology behind its AI-powered spying to other countries.

According to North Korean state media, cameras are now installed in most schools in the capital, Pyongyang, and other major cities. These cameras allow school staff to remotely monitor classroom activities by panning and zooming in on individual pupils or teachers.

Cameras are also widely utilized in factories, government buildings, and other workplaces to boost security and prevent theft, and facial recognition systems have been used to record visitors to Pyongyang’s Sunan airport since 2019.

According to the report, North Korea has also been expanding its traffic camera network beyond Pyongyang since 2021, deploying them on main routes leading into and out of the city, most likely to automatically record license plates.

The government may still need to fully utilize the data it collects, and it currently lacks an extensive network of security cameras in streets and residential areas, possibly due to power outages and many security agents already monitoring public life in Pyongyang and elsewhere.

However, North Korea appears to anticipate a future of more widespread video surveillance. According to the article, North Korean colleges and research institutions have spent years developing technologies for movement detection, facial recognition, and license plate identification.

Meanwhile, the state is creating complete biometric profiles for its inhabitants. The most recent edition of North Korean national identity cards is in a smartcard format and requires residents to supply fingerprints, facial pictures, and, according to one account, a blood test.

“For North Koreans, the development of CCTV means increased surveillance of their lives, especially if the cameras have automatic detecting systems. Citizens participating in illegal activities would be particularly vulnerable if such cameras become more widely deployed, as facial recognition could monitor their movements around cities,” Williams and Slavney stated.

“At present, North Koreans who get caught in activities such as smuggling or distributing illegally imported goods and foreign content can bribe local security services, but, unlike humans, security cameras cannot be bribed,” the officials stated.

According to Williams, the government will try to expand its monitoring network beyond large cities as infrastructure improves. He said exploiting massive volumes of video data would still be difficult, but North Korea may learn from the neighboring surveillance state.

The most significant challenge is the computational infrastructure required to process all this data in real time. Doing so on a national or even provincial scale is difficult if the network is to be truly widespread and include many cameras,” Williams added. The country would have to construct a tiny data center and ensure a steady electricity supply. Itina can influence it, as it has a much more Orwellian digital monitoring network despite being a rather free society in general.

VOR News

DETROIT — Following disappointing first-quarter sales, Tesla plans to lay off around a tenth of its personnel to slash expenses, according to numerous media reports.

Elon Musk, the CEO, disclosed the plans in a note to employees. The layoffs could affect approximately 14,000 of the 140,473 employees who worked for the Austin, Texas-based corporation at the end of last year.

Musk’s message stated that as Tesla prepares for its next phase of expansion, “it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity,” according to The New York Times and CNBC. Electrek, an electric vehicle website, initially reported the layoffs.

Also on Monday, two prominent Tesla execs announced their departure via the social networking platform X. Andrew Baglino, senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, announced his decision to resign after 18 years with the company.

Rohan Patel, senior global director of public policy and business development, announced on X that he was departing Tesla after eight years.

Baglino, who held numerous senior engineering positions at the company and was the chief technology officer, stated that quitting was difficult. “I loved tackling nearly every problem we solved as a team and feel gratified to have contributed to the mission of accelerating the transition to sustainable energy,” he stated in an email.

He has no definite plans other than spending more time with his family and small children, but he admits to having difficulties staying stationary for lengthy periods of time.

Musk praised Baglino in response. “Few have contributed as much as you,” he wrote in an email.

Monday afternoon, Tesla shares plummeted 4.8% after news of layoffs and departures surfaced. Tesla Inc. shares have lost around one-third of their value this year as electric vehicle sales slow.

Tesla sales fell substantially last quarter as global competition grew, electric vehicle sales growth stagnated, and price cuts failed to attract new customers. The business said it supplied 386,810 automobiles from January to March, about 9% less than the 423,000 it sold in the same quarter last year.

Since last year, Tesla has reduced costs on several models by up to $20,000 in response to increased competition and declining demand. The price decreases have caused used electric vehicle prices to fall, reducing Tesla’s profit margins.

The business has announced that it will unveil an autonomous robotaxi at an event in August.
