(V.News) – As of Wednesday, the firm said that the Food and Drug Administration of the United States will temporarily permit the importation of a syphilis drug that is manufactured by Laboratoires Delbert in France.
FDA Allows Imports of Syphilis Drug Amid Pfizer Shortage
According to a letter that was posted on the website of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Laboratoires Delbert stated that it was working with the health authority to import stenciling into the United States to alleviate the lack of syphilis drugs.
Pfizer (PFE.N) issued a warning in June that it would soon run out of supplies of its medicine, Bicillin L-A, which is used to treat syphilis and other bacterial infections in children.

This is because the company has had to prioritize versions of the treatment that are created for adults due to an increase in the number of syphilis infections in the adult population at the time. According to the website of the FDA, there has been a shortage of penicillin medications manufactured by Pfizer since April.
A poll conducted in August found that over one-third of hospital pharmacists in the United States said that they were having to limit, delay, or cancel treatments because medicine shortages in the country are getting closer to reaching an all-time high.
An extencilline formulation of penicillin known as Delbert’s extencilline is not permitted for use in the United States. In 2020, the World Health Organization predicts that 7.1 million people between the ages of 15 and 49 will have syphilis. Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted illness (STI) that may be prevented and treated.
