Tesla Recalls More Than 1.6 Million Cars In China Over Steering Software Issues
According to the country’s authority, Tesla is recalling more than 1.6 million vehicles in China due to faults with steering software and door-locking systems.
The recall affects its models S, X, 3, and Y and 7,538 foreign vehicles.
The issues will be resolved through remote software updates, eliminating the requirement for vehicles to be transported to dealerships or garages.
It comes less than a month after Tesla recalled two million vehicles in the United States due to software issues with autopilot.
In May of last year, the Chinese authority stated that over a million vehicles may have acceleration and braking system faults.

The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) in China labeled the scheduled car update as a recall even though it will occur remotely.
According to the SAMR, Tesla will issue an over-the-air software upgrade for 1,610,105 vehicles, including imported Models S and X and China-made Models 3 and Y vehicles manufactured between 2014 and 2023.
The regulator said this was done to address difficulties with the autosteer function and reduce the danger of an accident.
“For vehicles within the scope of this recall, when the automatic assisted steering function is turned on, the driver may misuse the level two combined assisted driving function, increasing the risk of vehicle collision and posing a safety hazard,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
Separately, Tesla will repair the software on 7,538 Model S and X vehicles to address the issue of doors that could potentially unlock in crashes.
