Here’s What The Starbucks Of The Future Looks Like

Published

starbucks

Starbucks has established its first café, designed to provide customers with disabilities with a “more accessible store experience,” according to a news release issued Friday.

The move is part of Starbucks’ larger inclusion push to create easily navigable retail settings for all its consumers. Any café that is rebuilt or opened in the future will begin incorporating the company’s “Inclusive Spaces Framework,” according to the press release.

According to Starbucks, customers who visit new stores will notice softer indoor lighting that “minimises glare, shadow patterns, and backlighting,” making it easier to see menu items or enter in-store information. The store design will also consider acoustics by using materials that reduce background noise or echoes, which may disrupt those wearing hearing aids.

In recent years, many shops have begun to consider customers‘ shopping experiences with varying requirements. The COVID-19 epidemic contributed to this increased awareness. Faced with social distancing restrictions, some stores created designated blocks — usually early in the morning — where immunocompromised, elderly, and disabled clients could shop in a less crowded atmosphere.

“The pandemic prompted many retailers to consider creating more inclusive retail spaces,” said Maria Town, president and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities. “The growth of grocery delivery and pickup is also an element of inclusive retail, and I think more retailers have invested in these types of programmes since the pandemic.”

Recently, some firms have implemented protocols and features to reduce overstimulation and sensory overload. Walmart began introducing “sensory-friendly” retail hours between 8 and 10 a.m. in November, during which in-store TV walls displayed a static image, music was turned off, and store lighting was dimmed. The business stated that these improvements were made to be more inclusive of customers and employees with sensory challenges, including neurodiverse persons.

In addition to focusing on ambience, Starbucks claimed new locations will reduce front-of-house congestion with a new “continuous, unobstructed pedestrian path” that makes it easier for customers in wheelchairs or motorised scooters to navigate the stores.

Counters for coffee and food pickup will also be lowered to “accommodate wheelchair access and support better communication” between employees and customers, according to the firm.

Other upgrades include a new register with a portable, adjustable stand, images of food and drink products, voice help, and screen magnification capabilities.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, one in every four American adults has a disability, which encompasses a wide range of physical and mental conditions. Although the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 established nondiscrimination regulations for public-facing businesses to protect customers with disabilities, Town claims that noncompliance remains a widespread problem in retail settings.

“Retailers continue to struggle with basic ADA compliance. Whether that means providing wide enough passageways or ensuring that bathrooms are accessible and disabled guests may check out independently’, Town stated. “There have been times when I have been shopping and could not physically reach the card reader.”

Starbucks announced their inclusion framework would be “open-sourced and further developed to help expand accessibility across the retail industry.” The company’s website offers a “Retail Checklist” for download, which outlines a three-tiered approach to developing inclusive spaces “that elevates retail environments, beyond the ADA.”

“Starbucks’ opening of their new store built with inclusive design elements is a big moment as we try to make retail spaces more accessible and inclusive,” Tony Coelho, the primary creator and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act, said in a statement. “We have to go beyond just what is required to put accessibility and inclusion first to ensure all people feel like they belong in community spaces.”

Disability rights campaigners have previously criticised the corporation for eliminating plastic straws. However, it reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion last month, establishing a “goal to ensure that physical and digital Starbucks environments meet an elevated standard of accessibility by 2030.”

Starbucks also stated that it supports legislative initiatives to expand and develop the ADA, such as repealing a provision in the Act that allows employers to pay disabled employees less than the minimum wage.

Town said it is heartening to see Starbucks approaching these issues in a systemic and policy-oriented manner.

“What I think is so fantastic about these efforts is that they highlight a commitment to policies that help us create a more inclusive economy,” she said. “Even if we create retail spaces and experiences that are inclusive, it becomes less meaningful if there’s still bias and disability exclusion baked into our policies that prevent people with disabilities from having things like a disposable income.”

Starbucks (SBUX) indicated on its earnings call last month that it plans to open 4% more stores in the United States, where it already has over 16,000. The chain last debuted a new store design in 2019, and the new style retained much of the previous appeal.

Coca-Cola reported higher-than-expected sales in the fourth quarter, with growth in Mexico, Germany, and other areas offsetting weaker demand in the United States.

According to the Atlanta beverage giant on Tuesday, revenue increased 7% to $10.8 billion in the October-December period, according to FactSet analysts, which exceeded Wall Street’s projection of $10.7 billion.

Coke’s revenue increased by 10% in 2023 as prices rose, but the corporation attributed this to hyperinflationary conditions in a few areas, like Argentina. The company forecasts full-year organic sales to expand at a more moderate rate of 6% to 7% this year, down from 12% last year.

“We anticipate hyperinflationary pricing will continue to play a role in 2024, but will moderate throughout the year,” Coke Chief Financial Officer John Murphy said during an investor conference call.

Unit case volumes increased by 2% during the quarter, with effervescent soft drinks, juices, and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar leading the way. Sports drinks, coffee, and tea all experienced decreased demand.

In North America, unit case volumes decreased 1% as falling demand for water, sports drinks, coffee, and tea offset rising sales of juice, dairy products, and Coca-Cola. Coke stated its North American prices increased by 8% in the fourth quarter and the whole year.

Chairman and CEO James Quincey stated that price rises have certainly impacted some consumers, who are going out less and buying more drinks for the home. However, he stated that Coke continues to see great buying power from other consumers, who prefer higher-priced beverages such as Fairlife milk, Core Power protein smoothies, and Simply juices.

“There’s clearly multiple things going on in the landscape in terms of categories and price points and we’ve been working to address both ends of those,” he added.

Unit case volumes increased in Coke’s other global markets, though the company reported a decrease in demand due to the Middle East war. Several other major U.S. corporations, like Starbucks and McDonald’s, have suffered sales disruptions due to the war.

Net income decreased 3% to $1.9 billion, or 46 cents per share. Without one-time expenses, such as restructuring expenditures, the corporation earned 49 cents per share. That was consistent with Wall Street’s forecast.

Coke shares were flat in early trading.

Ash Wednesday And Valentine’s Day Fall On The Same Day This Year. Here’s What You Need To Know

Published

on

Valentine's Day

February 14 is a holiday heavyweight this year due to a calendar conflict of events.

Yes, it’s Valentine’s Day, the yearly celebration of love and friendship distinguished by attractive couples, enthusiastic primary school pupils, and opponents who rail against its commercialization. But it also happens to be Ash Wednesday, the solemn day of fasting and reflection that marks the beginning of Christianity’s most penitential season.

Why is Ash Wednesday falling on Valentine’s Day this year?
Ash Wednesday is not a set date. It is timed to coincide with Easter Sunday, which this year falls on March 31 for the majority of Christians.

Valentine's Day

According to a lunar calendar estimate, Easter also changes around once a year, between March 22 and April 25.

According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Easter is observed on the first Sunday following the Paschal full moon, which occurs on or after the spring equinox (March 21). To find the date for Ash Wednesday, we go back six weeks to the First Sunday of Lent, four days before Ash Wednesday.

This year, it occurs to be February 14.

What happens on Ash Wednesday?
Not every Christian observes Ash Wednesday. Those who do often attend an Ash Wednesday church service, during which a priest or other minister writes an ash cross — or what appears to be one — on their forehead. The dispersion of ashes emphasizes human death, among other themes.

It is a mandatory day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. The abstinence rules are maintained on Fridays during Lent, the period of repentance and penance before Holy Week observances, most notably their belief in Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection from the dead.

WHERE DID THE ASHES COME FROM?

According to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the ashes are usually from palms used on Palm Sunday, a week before Easter.

Ashes can be purchased, but some churches create their own by burning palms from previous years. For example, several churches and schools in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese want to organize palm-burning ceremonies this year.

Can Catholics celebrate Valentine’s Day on Ash Wednesday?
In addition to the candy heart and chocolate-fueled secular celebrations, February 14 is the Feast of St. Valentine. However, Ash Wednesday, which requires fasting and abstinence, is considerably more important and should be prioritized, according to Catholic Bishop Richard Henning of Providence, Rhode Island, in the diocese’s official journal. His predecessor sent a similar letter in 2018.

“Ash Wednesday is the much higher value and deserves the full measure of our devotion,” he said. “I respectfully request that we keep Ash Wednesday’s particular importance. If you wish to wine and dine your Valentine, please do so on the Tuesday before. February 13 is Mardi Gras, or ‘Fat Tuesday,’ a great day to feast and revel!”

Who was Saint Valentine, On Valentine’s Day

The origins of Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine are unclear, but the event began as a liturgical feast day for a third-century Christian martyr, according to Lisa Bitel, a history and religion professor at the University of Southern California.

In the Conversation, her piece, “The’real’ St. Valentine was no patron of love,” indicates that there may have been more than one St. Valentine beheaded for their beliefs simultaneously, but none of them appear to have been romantic. The emphasis on love appears to have occurred later.
