(MINNEAPOLIS) — Brian Daboll, the team’s first-year head coach, had his young squad completely prepared. Daniel Jones performed at a level well above his experience.

The New York Giants confidently came into Minnesota’s boisterous stadium and beat the tight-finish masters at their own game.

Jones threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards playoff game for the Giants, who defeated the Vikings 31-24 in the wild-card round on Sunday, handing them their first loss in 12 one-score games this season.

“This is what we’re supposed to do with a cornerstone franchise with such a great heritage,” wide receiver Darius Slayton said. “We were meant to make the playoffs. We’re meant to be a successful team. We’ll keep striving to live up to the legacy that’s been established.”

Saquon Barkley scored twice on the ground, including the game-winning touchdown the fourth quarter. Jones became the first quarterback in NFL history to have 300-plus yards passing, two-plus passing touchdowns, and 70-plus yards rushing in a postseason game.

Defence Swarmed The Tight End

“He’s a fantastic player,” said Barkley, who finished with 109 yards on 14 touches. “The playoffs are where you can build your legacy, and what a way to start.”

The defense swarmed tight end T.J. Hockenson near midfield after a 3-yard reception from Kirk Cousins on fourth-and-8 to force a turnover on downs with 1:44 remaining and no timeouts remaining for the Vikings (13-5).

The Giants (10-7-1) advanced to the divisional round, where they will face No. 1 seed and NFC East rival Philadelphia on Saturday night. They converted seven of thirteen third downs and dominated a Vikings defense that had been shaky all season.

“I believe we’ve had some of our better games recently and found some stuff that works for us,” said Jones, who connected with Isaiah Hodgins and Daniel Bellinger for touchdowns. “As a result, we’ll keep doing it. “I believed the coaching team did an excellent job preparing us.”

Incredible Win For The Giants

Two touchdowns and a rushing touchdown to cap the game’s first series, with the too-short ball to Hockenson being his only noticeable error. Cousins was even more irritated by his placement on the third-and-8 pass to K.J. Osborn, who had a first-half touchdown catch; Cor’Dale Flott intercepted that.

Cousins finally got to play in the playoffs in Minnesota in his fifth season, five years and one day after Case Keenum threw a touchdown pass of 61 yards to Stefon Diggs that helped the Vikings beat New Orleans 29-24 in the divisional round.

The Vikings held to form by trailing by 10 points late in the second quarter and again early in the third quarter.

Cousins, dragged to the ground by the blitz-fueled Giants defense, connected with Irv Smith Jr. for a touchdown that pulled the Vikings within 24-21.

Then something extraordinary happened: the defense got a stop.

The Second Half Was A Nail Biter

Danielle Hunter’s sack prompted the first Giants punt, and the Vikings converted the game-tying field goal the other way. They did, though, lose some vital points when Cousins ran a successful fourth-and-1 at the 15 that was neutralized by a false start on left tackle Christian Darrisaw.

On the Giants’ next drive, Jones converted a penalty-free fourth-and-1 sneak. With 7:47 remaining, Barkley chugged into the end zone to take the lead.

“There were genuine tears in there,” said first-year coach Kevin O’Connell outside the locker room. “There are some guys who expected to win a world championship. You have to give credit to the Giants.”

JEFFERSON VS. JACKSON

Hockenson 11 times for 10 receptions and 129 yards, but after Justin Jefferson had four catches on the first touchdown drive, he only had three more the rest of the way and one in the second half.

In the Giants’ 27-24 win last month, the NFL’s best receiver caught 12 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. He was almost always accompanied by a safety, and Adoree’ Jackson did a great job covering him in his first game back after a seven-game knee injury layoff.

“I believe in myself all the time, but it’s always pleasant and appreciated when others believe in you,” Jackson added.

REPORT OF INJURY

Azeez Ojulari, an outside linebacker for the Giants, hurt his quadriceps in the second quarter and was ruled out at the half. After covering a kickoff in the fourth quarter, backup FS Jason Pinnock (abdomen) exited on a cart and was taken to the hospital for treatment. He rejoined the Giants in the locker room and flew home with them.

LB for the Vikings Brian Asamoah II (concussion) was hurt late in the second quarter while covering a kickoff. Cameron Dantzler Sr., the backup cornerback, was inactive due to a personal matter.

Phoenix — Brittney Griner, a WNBA star, says she considered suicide during her first several weeks in a Russian jail following her 2022 drug-related arrest.

Griner spoke for the first time about her months-long captivity in Russia during an hour-long interview broadcast on ABC Wednesday night. Her memoir, “Coming Home,” is scheduled to be released on May 7.

Griner was seized after arriving at a Moscow airport when Russian investigators claimed a search of her luggage found vape cartridges purportedly containing cannabis oil.

“I wanted to take my life more than once in the first few weeks,” Griner told interviewer Robin Roberts. “I felt like leaving here so badly.”

She opted against it in part because she was concerned that the Russian authorities would not return her body to her family.

Her plight began at the same time Russia invaded Ukraine, escalating tensions between Russia and the United States, and ended only after she was released in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Griner stated that she was ordered to compose a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin before being released.

“They had me write this letter. “It was in Russian,” she explained. “I had to ask for pardon and gratitude from their so-called great leader. “I didn’t want to do it, but I also wanted to get home.”

She was dismayed when she boarded the plane for the transaction and found that Paul Whelan, another American held in Russia, was not with her.

“I continued on and didn’t see him; perhaps he’s next. “Maybe they’ll bring him next,” she added. “They shut the door, and I was like, Are you serious? “You are not going to let this man come home right now.”

Griner plays for the Phoenix Mercury. The WNBA season starts on May 14.

Milton Keynes, England – Red Bull announced Wednesday that Adrian Newey, the designer who played a key role in Red Bull’s Formula One supremacy, will retire early next year.

“For almost two decades it has been my great honor to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning team,” stated the former Ferrari driver. “However, I feel now is an opportune moment to hand that baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.”

Adrian joined Red Bull in 2006 and has helped the team win seven driver’s titles, including the last three seasons for defending champion Max Verstappen and six constructors’ crowns.

Red Bull announced that its chief technical officer will step away from F1 design to focus on the company’s first hypercar, the RB 17.

“All of our greatest moments from the past 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand on the technical tiller,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stated. “When Adrian joined Red Bull, I knew he was already a famous designer. Two decades and 13 championships later, he is remembered as a true legend. He is also my friend, and I shall be eternally grateful to him for everything he contributed to our collaboration.”

The news of Newey’s leaving could result in a bidding war for his services. Because Newey is free to join another team after leaving Red Bull, he has the potential to have an impact on the 2026 vehicle for whichever team he chooses. The next major regulatory reform is scheduled for 2026, and having Newey on board would provide a huge edge to his future employers.

Mike Trout’s Exceptional Talent Characterized His Initial Decade In The Sport Of Baseball. Currently, Injuries Are The Focal Point Of Attention.

AP - VOR News Image

ANAHEIM, California (AP) – Mike Trout remained injury-free throughout his illustrious baseball career until May 2017, when he suffered a torn thumb ligament while sliding headfirst into second base.

Upon his return after missing 39 games, the renowned power hitter successfully stole second base, employing a headfirst sliding technique once more.

“I will not alter my playing style,” stated Trout with a smile that evening in the Los Angeles Angels’ clubhouse, displaying the self-assurance of a remarkable young athlete.

Less than seven years later, in the corridor outside the identical Anaheim clubhouse, Trout struggled to hold back tears on Tuesday as he publicly grappled with his fourth significant injury in the last four seasons.

“It is simply exasperating,” he murmured softly, his gaze averted.” “However, we will overcome this situation.” I exert a high level of effort while playing the game, and unforeseen events occur as a result.

Trout may still have the title of the most exceptional baseball player of his generation, but he will never again possess the same sense of invincibility he had at the age of 25. Similar to Ken Griffey Jr. in the past, Trout has encountered physical issues during his mid-career, which have hindered his rapid rise to success and slowed down his impressive performance at the plate.

Despite the continued brilliance of 32-year-old Trout’s skills and enthusiasm on the field, his physical well-being has been compromised during his second decade in professional baseball.

Trout has participated in 266 games since the commencement of the 2021 season. The upcoming encounter between the Angels and Philadelphia on Wednesday will be the 251st game that he has been absent from during this period.

Trout achieved 285 home runs in his career before winning his third AL MVP award in 2019. Since then, the center fielder for the Angels has only hit 93 home runs in the four-plus seasons. His 2020 campaign was shortened due to COVID-19, and injuries have further hindered his performance.

Following the 2019 season, Trout’s hit count stood at 1,324, but he has only managed to add 324 hits since then, thus impeding his progress towards reaching 2,000 or 3,000 hits. Since 2019, his batting average (.277) and OPS (.958) have been notably lower than his career averages.

Trout’s bat speed is one of the quickest in the major leagues. However, he has admitted to facing difficulties with his mechanics during the previous two seasons. These challenges include a decrease in his ability to make contact with the ball and problems when facing pitchers who throw at high speeds. Trout maintained his position as the leader in the big leagues with 10 home runs until sustaining an injury this week. However, his batting average had dropped to .220, causing his lifetime average to briefly fall below .300 before his injury.

Trout now has a damaged meniscus in his left knee. Adding to his frustration, he is unsure of the cause – it might have occurred while racing in the outfield or walking to the dugout.

“Mike’s desire to play exceeds that of anyone else,” stated Angels general manager Perry Minasian. “He has a strong affection for this.” He has a deep affection for every aspect of this. Upon awakening, he contemplates it. He contemplates it before going to sleep. He is completely devoted to baseball, making it a central part of his life. I empathize deeply with him.

Trout emerged as a prominent and impressive player in baseball throughout the 2010s. Hailing from a little hamlet in southern New Jersey, he captivated the sport when he joined Orange County. He possesses an electrifying ability to hit the ball, displays excitement and skill in fielding, and is known for his intensely competitive nature, sometimes compared to Mickey Mantle as a successor regarding spiritual qualities.

Trout displayed remarkable versatility despite his sole achievement of leading the Angels to the playoffs in 2014. However, as the Halos’ consecutive losing seasons accumulated, he progressively grew acquainted with anguish, nights without sleep, and endless medical interventions.

Trout’s participation in the 2021 season was limited to only 36 games due to a perplexingly long recovery from a strained calf. Despite a back injury that caused him to miss five weeks of the 2022 season, he hit an impressive 40 home runs.

Trout sustained a hand fracture while attempting to catch a foul ball on July 3rd of last year. In August, he attempted to return when there was a fleeting possibility of the Angels making a postseason push. However, he only managed to play one agonizing game before deciding to end his season.

According to new Angels manager Ron Washington, Trout has exhibited a positive mental state throughout this season. “He was thoroughly enjoying his visits to the ballpark and eagerly embracing the opportunity to immerse himself in the rhythm of the season. Unfortunately, an unexpected event disrupted his plans.”

The Angels have not specified a timeframe for Trout’s recovery following surgery. However, it is common for sportsmen with this condition to be sidelined for a minimum of a few months, frequently more.

Regardless of whether Trout is present, the Angels are now experiencing a period of decline.

The team lost Shohei Ohtani, who signed a lucrative $700 million free-agent contract with the nearby Dodgers. Additionally, the front management needed to acquire notable assistance for Trout. The Halos are now at a record of 11-19 heading into May, losing 10 out of their last 12 games. It is becoming increasingly probable that they will have their 10th consecutive non-playoff season and their ninth consecutive losing season, which are currently the longest active records in Major League Baseball.

The injury issues faced by Trout have had a devastating impact on his franchise. Similarly, the substantial injury troubles of Anthony Rendon, the third baseman who owner Arte Moreno signed for a hefty $245 million, were intended to complement Trout’s abilities and offer a dynamic partnership. Rendon is presently sidelined with another ailment, a hamstring strain unlikely to mend expeditiously.During the abbreviated 2020 season, Rendon and Trout shared the field for 46 out of 60 games. Subsequently, the Angels’ top two earners have collectively participated in a mere 118 out of the team’s 516 games (22.8%) since the commencement of the 2021 season.

Trout, being older and more delicate than the youthful star of the previous decade, has gained wisdom. Nowadays, when he slides, he tries to go feet-first and wears a large, protective sliding mitt.

His contract, worth $426.5 million, is valid until 2030. He has often expressed his lack of desire to depart from Anaheim. Trout remains determined to transform the Angels into a successful team, anticipating greater satisfaction due to the lengthy process.

However, before that, additional surgery and subsequent rehabilitation must be undergone.

“The procedure is quite straightforward,” Trout stated. I will promptly obtain it and return as quickly as possible. “However, this is challenging.”
